Tulip Festival - Sweet Eats Adventure Farm

This is the first time we’ve attempted to run a tulip festival. As we go back and forth with the company in holland where we sourced our tulip bulbs & a few other farms that have done this before up north and dealt with freezing temperatures we’ve discussed many different game plans & possibilities.

As the weather forecast called for 26° as it’s low for a short period of time Tuesday night we had planned on removing the row covers from our strawberries 🍓 & putting them on our Tulips🌷 Wednesday afternoon. In actuality the low Tuesday night was 19° for an extended period of time while the flowers were uncovered. The low Wednesday night looked the same if not worse so we decided to go ahead and throw on row covers even though the temperature had not risen above freezing on Wednesday & we knew we would damage some of the bulbs as they were fragile and some of the bloomed tulip heads were breaking as we dropped over the row covers.🥶

So what does that mean for the Tulip 💐 Festival? We’re not entirely sure to be honest. It’s a wait and see game at this point. The row covers are only designed to help with 5° or so degrees of protection so our assumption is that the 10% (25k flowers) or Early Bloomers are most likely gone however tulips are notorious for doing well in cold weather. That being said this cold does haunt the growth so it needs to be above freezing for the growth cycle to continue for the other 90% (200k flowers). Additionally the frigid temps we’re having here may be too cold for the growth cycle to continue as some of the plants may be too cold far along in the life cycle & may be dead / permanently dormant, we won’t know until the temps go up & we uncover the flowers to let nature do its thing.

Tentatively we will remain closed 2/20 & 2/21, Saturday is up in the air if we will be open currently due to the current forecast calling for nasty weather again. Now for those who are current ticket holders and worried we will do, if we close we will go ahead and automatically issue refunds for the dates we’ve closed. If we remain open we will do our best to accommodate all of you by switching dates & times to best fit your schedule. We’ll update more soon.
